Students at Winston Heights are empowered to develop the three M’s of debating: Manner, Matter and Method.
The school debating teams participate in the local Interschool Debating Competition which includes Public and Catholic schools.
Members of each team are selected from a squad of Year 5 and Year 6 students who work collaboratively to develop their arguments and rebuttals. Our students debate at a very high level and have placed first in the local competition six times in the past nine years. A number of our ex-students have gone on in high school to achieve outstanding success with their debating teams.
The debating team members attend weekly training sessions with experienced coaches who develop their confidence to speak in front of an audience. Any student with an interest in debating is included and all levels of ability are catered for.
Four places are offered each year to Year 5 students with a keen interest in public speaking to attend Sydney West Debating Camp where they have the opportunity to enhance their skills and techniques.
