High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in programs in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
We challenge our students to think, create, lead and grow every day.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students can take part in HPGE opportunities in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Winston Heights Public School High, High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is part of our everyday practice. Many students show outstanding abilities, and we support their growth to help them achieve great things.
- Our classroom practices support and extend high potential and gifted students by identifying students' learning needs in the classroom and using evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students.
- Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
- Our teachers engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners.
Our school offers a diverse range of opportunities across the 4 domains of potential: creative, intellectual, physical and social-emotional.
- Intellectual strengths are deepened through debating, STEM clubs, Tech Club Maths Olympiad, Maths Explorer, competitions and creative writing groups.
- Creative Talent is celebrated through our extra curricular groups including band, drama, ukulele, K-2, stage 2 and senior dance, recorder and our K-2 and 2-6 Performance choirs. Our creative students perform at the HPAF, Festival of Instrumental Music, School concerts, assemblies and our end of year Talent Showcase.
- Social and emotional skills grow through SRC, Student Leaders, Library Monitors and Peer Support Leaders. Wellbeing is fostered through our PBL award, gardening clubs, our on site wellbeing SLSOs and Buddy programs.
- Physical talents are nurtured through PSSA sport, tennis, Premier's Sporting Challenge and differentiated PE including external providers such as Motiv8.
At Winston Heights Public School we provide access to local, state and national competitions and events to help students explore and extend their talents.
- Students participate in opportunities such as The Premier’s Debating Challenge, APSMO Maths Olympiad, Premier’s Multicultural Public Speaking competition, The Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) and The Representative School Sport Pathway and PSSA and CHSSA events.
- Statewide and NSW Department of Education support is available for high potential and gifted students, and we help with entries, preparation and reflection so every experience feeds back into learning.
